More People Lifted Out of Extreme Poverty

A survey on rural poverty by the National Bureau of Statistics shows that the number of poverty-stricken people in rural areas, defined as those with a net annual income of less than 2,300 yuan (US$338) per capita, had declined by 66.8 percent to 5.51 million by the end of 2019, with the poverty ratio, those in poverty as a percentage of total population, dropping to 0.6 percent.

A survey on rural poverty by the National Bureau of Statistics shows that the number of poverty-stricken people in rural areas, defined as those with a net annual income of less than 2,300 yuan (US$338) per capita, had declined by 66.8 percent to 5.51 million by the end of 2019, with the poverty ratio, those in poverty as a percentage of total population, dropping to 0.6 percent.   
 
The percentage of the rural population living in extreme poverty has declined by 64.7 percent to 3.23 million in West China, by 69.7 percent to 1.81 million in Central China and by 68 percent to 470,000 in East China. All provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions have seen their rural poverty ratio reduce to below 2.2 percent. 
 
The average annual disposable income of the rural poverty-stricken population was 11,567 yuan (US$1,701), an 11.5 percent nominal growth and 8 percent actual growth compared to that in 2018. The growth rate in annual disposable income of the rural poverty-stricken population was higher than the growth rate in the average disposable income of all rural dwellers.
