As the supply of agricultural products in China feels the the impacts of the trade war and several natural disasters this year, investment in infrastructure and diversified supply is more crucial than ever, read an editorial in the 21st Century Business Herald.

Prices for fruits and meats increased fast since early this year. The China Agricultural Industry Development Report (2019) and the Global Food Policy Report (2019) issued last month by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences said that although China’s grain production will remain stable this year, prices of some agricultural products risk further fluctuations.

The trade war has caused shortfall in imports. This is a reminder of the importance of diversifying import sources. Extreme weather brought on by global warming has also affected agricultural supply. Floods, droughts and extreme cold weather have hit China this year, impacting crop production.

China should speed up land reform, increase investment in agricultural infrastructure, and improve efficiency of agricultural production, the editorial read, adding that agricultural firms should improve supply chains through cooperation with overseas exporters or building overseas production bases.
