Four years ago, Beijing and its nearby city of Zhangjiakou won their bid to host the 24th Winter Olympic Games in 2022. Since then, winter sports in China have regained popularity, and the sector has become a major source of tourism revenue for many northern cities. According to the China Tourism Academy, 197 million people took part in winter sports from November 2017 to March 2018, generating revenues of 330 billion yuan (US$50b). It is expected that 340 million people will participate in winter sports tourism which will generate revenues of 680 billion yuan (US$102b) from 2021 to 2022, according to the China National Tourism Administration. It will become a major driver for economic transformation and upgrade, particularly in the rust belt of China’s northeastern provinces.
