More than 10 years after its establishment, Huawei’s global reach started in Russia in 1998 before it expanded its business rapidly worldwide. Since 2005, the company’s overseas sales exceeded
domestic sales and it embarked on rapid global expansion. In 2017, Huawei had business networks in more than 170 countries and regions, generating sales revenues of 603.6 billion yuan (US$88.3b), and providing services to over one-third of the world. Huawei’s success hinges on its relentless endeavors to keep abreast with its use of cutting-edge technologies and advanced management, familiarity with the global patent system and telecommunication standards, as well as its good cooperation with stakeholders worldwide. In December 2018, Canada, at the request of the US, detained Huawei senior executive Meng Wanzhou, which has cast a shadow over the company’s global strategy. It has become a critical moment for Huawei amid increasingly fierce global competition before the advent of 5G applications.
