Since China’s first private security service enterprise was established in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province in December 1984, the market has seen explosive year-on-year growth. According to statistics from the Ministry of Public Security, China was home to more than 4,200 security service providers, employing over 4.5 million staff by the end of 2014. Security staff played a crucial role in maintaining social order, particularly at a time of large population mobility when Chinese cities received an influx of job-seekers. Alongside the rapid expansion of security staff, however, some problems remain unsolved, including uncouth management, illegal detention and gang crime. To date, the staffing crunch is also an irksome problem, as most security guards are not highly educated and take the job when they have no other choices. To maintain healthy development in the sector, it is urgent to conduct systematic training and raise the employment criteria.
