In 2014, China’s first professional air ambulance was established in Beijing to carry out emergency rescue missions and transport patients to hospitals. Four years later, China has some 100 medical rescue helicopters nationwide. Air medical services require efforts from several groups, including aviation companies, medical institutions, road departments and even the military. In March 2018, China’s Ministry of Emergency Management was launched, suggesting China’s emergency rescue system is shifting from disaster recovery to prevention. Airborne medical rescue has significantly strengthened China’s emergency management capability. But experts argue that currently, it is a service reserved mainly for the rich because of its high costs. An operating model is needed that involves lower fees and can help the general public.
