Complications Ahead for China-US Relationship

An economic recession in the US will be bad news for China and should prompt a rethink about China-US relations, a scholar says

An economic recession in the US will be bad news for China. That's because it will compel the US to step up its preventive measures against China’s rise, says Fang Changping, professor of international relations at Renmin University of China, writing for The Paper.

Fang says China needs to review the complexity of China-US relations. Economic issues have become a major site of strategic competition between the two nations. With the Donald Trump administration focused on revitalizing the domestic economy, economic cooperation appears to no longer be the only choice.

China needs to review this change in the nature of China-US relations, Fang says. Competition has extended beyond traditional interests to their varied approaches to local development and global governance, according to the scholar. It’s narrow-minded to think that Trump’s strategies will fail in the face of domestic and international opposition. China should be prepared in advance for a growing challenge from the US, he says.
