There were a total of 11.62 million live births in China over the first eight months of 2017, representing a 2.4 percent year-on-year increase, with 52 percent of the babies being the second child in their families.
The figures were released by the China Population Association (CPA) at its latest conference held in Beijing. According to the CPA, China saw a new peak in the birth rate in 2016 when the country started lifting its ban on second children. In 2016, China saw altogether 18.46 million babies born alive, 45 percent of whom were the second child in their families, 15 percent more than that of 2013.
Wang Pei’an, deputy director of China’s National Health and Family Planning Commission said that China’s “second child” policy will keep having a positive effect in the years to come.
