“FAST has become the pride of China. Let’s retweet the post to salute Mr Nan Rendong.”

By NewsChina Updated Nov.1

September 25 marks the first anniversary of the use of China’s FAST – the 500 Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope – the world’s largest single dish radio telescope designed to explore the origins of the cosmos and interstellar matters. FAST’s chief scientist and engineer Nan Rendong, 72, passed away due to lung cancer in September. Chinese media revealed that Nan gave up the high salary offered by foreign companies two decades ago and devoted his life to FAST, whose sensitivity is reportedly about 10 times that of Germany’s 100-meter Effelsberg Telescope and 2.25 times that of the US’s 350-meter Arecibo Radio Telescope. China’s State broadcaster China Central Television wrote a post on its Sina microblog to mourn Nan.
