A wrestling club in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, has come under fire after it was revealed to have adopted more than 400 local orphans and trained them to become future UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) contestants. According to media reports, the orphans came from poor, mountainous areas and enjoyed free meals and training at the club. Although the club claimed that all of the orphans joined them voluntarily, many netizens criticized it for exploiting the children. Others argued that life in the club was better than suffering from hunger and cold outside and that it was the local government’s poor provision for orphans that should be blamed.
