The first independently-formulated standards for Virtual Reality (VR) head-mounted display devices was released at a meeting, co-chaired by members of China Virtual Reality Industry Association, the news portal Xinhuanet and the China Electronics Standardization Institute (CESI) on April 6, which aims to promote international cooperation and achieve win-win development in VR.

Zhang Feng, chief engineer at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said this standard plays an important role in the development of the VR hardware market, and he added China’s VR industry in general is still in its initial stage, and domestic VR-related enterprises are not fully expert in its core technologies, along with other problems such as the serious shortage of key components in the industry supply chain, underdeveloped supporting facilities and management.

According to Lin Ning, secretary of the Party committee of CESI, this standard stipulates product performance, display types and measuring methods in different types of head-mounted display devices so it could also standardize the design and production of other head-mounted displays.
