A group of Chinese scientists were transferred by helicopter to Snow Dragon, China’s Antarctic exploration ship, at around 9pm local time on February 13, marking the completion of site selection for the country’s fifth Antarctic station, carried out by its 33rd Antarctic expedition team.

During the expedition, Snow Dragon was moored off McMurdo Sound and Victoria Land in the Ross Sea.

A nine-member site selection team conducted research tasks, such as geological surveys and basic mapping, on five pre-selected sites, including Inexpressible Island, identified as potential sites by a previous expedition.

The Ross Sea is a preferred route for accessing the area and is dubbed the “Natural Laboratory” for understanding the Earth’s energy and material exchange as well as climate change.
