Beijing has issued regulations to put an end to the mixed disposal of garbage, following the pioneering footsteps of Zhejiang Province.
According to the Beijing Municipal Commission of City Management (BMCCM), Beijing will sort waste by issuing two different sizes of bins for dry and wet waste. The meeting also proposed to combine the recycling industry with the garbage sorting industry and set up collection places to sort both garbage and recyclables.
Lin Jinwen, director of the Division for Solid Waste Management at the BMCCM, explained the two different garbage cans are divided into "kitchen" and "other waste," and said they would set up a GPS system to supervise garbage trucks.
Netizens on Sina Weibo, similar to Twitter, responded that many previous regulatory attempts had not worked, since residents know little about how to sort garbage and that even if they did sort their waste, it would all be mixed up together in a single truck, but hoped the new regulations would really lead to waste sorting.
The BMCCM also stated that Beijing would establish an incentive system of rewards and penalties, set up recycling sites for bulky items and used clothing, and monitor waste sorting with a range of mechanisms.
