Some 5,000 wild birds were found to have been killed by huge areas of clapnet in the wetlands of Tianjin and Tangshan (Hebei Province), two of the world’s major habitats for migratory birds. The use of hunting nets was discovered when local volunteers made their regular inspections of the areas in late September. By October 6, the volunteers had torn down around 20,000 meters of netting and saved nearly 3,000 birds tangled in the nets. The forestry department and local police have launched an investigation into the bird hunting, but netizens questioned why the authorities always arrive after such incidents rather than before.
